Introduction

Litsea cubeba oil is a natural essential oil extracted from fresh Litsea cubeba fruits.
Litsea cubeba, a deciduous shrub or small tree of Lauraceae, mainly grows in East Asia. It’s widely planted in southern China’s provinces. Yongzhou’s Litsea cubeba oil in Hunan is a national GI product.
Extraction methods include steam distillation, Soxhlet extraction, microwave extraction, and CO₂ supercritical extraction. Microwave and supercritical extraction have higher volatile oil yields.
Its main component is citral, usually 60% – 80%, with methyl heptenone, citronellal, α – pinene, camphene, limonene, α – humulene, p – isopropyl methanol, geraniol, camphor, etc.

Physical Characteristics

Appearance: A pale yellow to yellow clear liquid.
Solubility: Soluble in 75% ethanol and other organic solvents.
Other indicators: Refractive index is 1.480 – 1.4900, relative density 0.880 – 0.905, flash point ≥ 70℃, optical rotation between +3° and +12°.
