Detailed Description

Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater species of Chlorophyta belonging to the family Haematococcaceae. Researchers recognize this species for its high content of the powerful antioxidant astaxanthin, which plays an important role in aquaculture and cosmetics. The organism accumulates large amounts of astaxanthin in its resting cells when environmental conditions become unfavorable for normal growth. Such conditions include intense light, high salinity, and limited nutrient availability. Haematococcus pluvialis commonly occurs in temperate regions worldwide. As a result, its resting cysts often produce the blood-red coloration observed at the bottom of dried rock pools and bird baths. Astaxanthin causes this coloration and actively protects the resting cysts from the harmful effects of UV radiation during direct sunlight exposure.

Astaxanthin naturally occurs in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, crayfish, crustaceans, and the feathers of certain birds. It gives salmon meat its red color and produces the red coloration seen in cooked shellfish. In 1975, Professor Basil Weedon’s research group first elucidated the chemical structure of astaxanthin through synthesis.
