Detailed Description
Algae Haematococcus pluvialis
CAS No: 472-61-7

Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater species of Chlorophyta belonging to the family Haematococcaceae. In particular, researchers recognize this species for its exceptionally high content of the potent antioxidant astaxanthin, which industries widely use in aquaculture and cosmetics. More importantly, the organism actively accumulates high levels of astaxanthin in its resting cells when environmental conditions become unfavorable for normal growth. Specifically, intense light exposure, high salinity, and limited nutrient availability trigger this process. From a geographical perspective, Haematococcus pluvialis commonly inhabits temperate regions worldwide. Consequently, its resting cysts often cause the blood-red coloration observed at the bottom of dried rock pools and bird baths. This coloration occurs because astaxanthin actively protects the resting cysts from the harmful effects of UV radiation during direct sunlight exposure.

In a broader biological context, astaxanthin naturally occurs in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, crayfish, crustaceans, and even in the feathers of certain birds. As a result, it gives salmon flesh its red color and produces the red coloration seen in cooked shellfish. From a historical standpoint, Professor Basil Weedon’s research group first elucidated the chemical structure of astaxanthin through synthesis in 1975.

From a nutritional and biochemical perspective, astaxanthin differs from several carotenes and another known carotenoid because the human body does not convert it into vitamin A. Likewise, similar to other carotenoids, astaxanthin shows self-limited oral absorption and extremely low oral toxicity; therefore, researchers have identified no toxic syndrome associated with its oral intake. Although astaxanthin demonstrates slightly lower antioxidant activity than some other carotenoids in certain model systems, it effectively quenches free radicals in living organisms depending strongly on its lipid solubility. Accordingly, its antioxidant performance varies with the biological system under protection.

In terms of applications, manufacturers use astaxanthin not only as a natural nutritional component but also as a widely distributed food supplement. Accordingly, producers formulate these supplements for human, animal, and aquaculture consumption. At present, the industry produces commercial astaxanthin from both natural and synthetic sources.
