Introduction

Chlorophyll is key for photosynthesis, main in green plants.
It’s a magnesium – containing tetrapyrrole derivative.
A porphyrin ring forms from 4 pyrrole & 4 methylene groups, with Mg at center.
A side – ring with carbonyl & carboxyl groups is the isocyclic ring.
Its carboxyl binds to methanol via an ester bond.
The part binding to propionic acid by ester is phytol, the “tail”.

Physical Properties

Usually green. Chlorophyll a is blue – green, b is yellow – green.
Appears as green – to – dark – green blocks, flakes, powder or viscous substance, slightly stinky, melting point 120℃ – 153℃.
Insoluble in water, soluble in ether, alcohol, acetone, chloroform, carbon disulfide and benzene, hard to dissolve in cold methanol, nearly insoluble in petroleum ether.

Chemical Properties

Not very stable. Decomposed by light, acid, alkali, oxygen, oxidants.
In acidic conditions, loses Mg in porphyrin ring to form pheophytin.
Chlorophyll solution can do some photosynthesis – like reactions, oxidize or reduce certain compounds in light.
As an ester of chlorophyllin, it can undergo saponification reaction.
