This herb is the root of Astragalus membranaceus Bge. Var. Mongholicus (Bge. ) Hsiao or Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch. ) Bge (family Leguminosae). It is produced mainly in Shanxi, Gansu, Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia. It is dug in spring or autumn, sliced, dried in the sun.
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. It was often combined with other herbs to strengthen the body against disease.
